Driving in bad weather

Date
24 December 2009

The AA reports the highest number of bad-weather call-outs in its history...

Icy weather is taking its toll on the motorists of Britain. Make sure you are prepared for the worst if you are venturing out by car in this weather. Take an emergency kit with you: warm coats, scarves, hats and gloves for everyone in the car; waterproof boots in case you have to get out and walk; a torch, water, and snacks in case you get stranded; and if possible a thermos with a hot drink if you are going to be driving a fair distance.

It is also a good idea to carry a shovel and some old carpet, sacking or fabric so that you can get some traction under your wheels if you get stuck.

Most importantly, charge your mobile before you go and take the in-car charger with you. Before you set out, tell someone where you are going and report back when you arrive.

Remember, when you buy your car insurance from 50plus, you get breakdown cover FREE!
