Long dark evenings are the perfect cover for thieves: make sure your home is secure.
- All the outside doors need deadlocks - use them every time you leave the house, and at night when everyone is asleep.
- Window locks stop access by opportunistic criminals.
- A peephole in your front door allows you to inspect callers. Open the door on the security chain if you don’t know who it is and check identity documents properly. Call the organisation to verify if you are not satisfied.
- Security lights with motion sensors alert you to activity near the house at night.
- Low-level lighting round the outside of the house, and in the garden, prevents areas of shadow where someone could lurk. Keep bushes cut back.
- If you live in an isolated spot, CCTV could provide you with peace of mind.
- Be a good neighbour: keep an eye on your neighbours’ houses while they are out and note down the number of any unknown cars parked suspiciously or driving very slowly along the road for no apparent reason.
