Why you need that travel insurance…

Date
10 February 2010

There have been reports in the press recently of UK travellers who have come to grief after being injured or stranded abroad.

Everyone knows how much medical care costs in the States: few travellers would venture there without taking out a good inclusive travel policy to protect themselves against illness or injury.

However, the UK has reciprocal health care agreements with other EU countries, and this tends to produce a false sense of security in the British. If we are only popping over for a city weekend or to spend a few days in the winter sun, surely we don’t need actual travel insurance?

The answer is that indeed we do. Travel insurance is there to cope with the unforeseen – your airline going bust; your baggage going missing; your money being stolen; specialised air transport home if you are badly injured, the ambulance at the airport to ferry you to a UK hospital; the cost of accommodation for your family while you are hospitalised abroad; interpreters to help you with your problems if you don’t speak the language. Medical cover is just the tip of the iceberg when something goes wrong, even in Europe where you are only a couple of hours from home.

Good travel insurance policies, like the cover we offer you at 50plus, allows for the above. Be sure to disclose all pre-existing medical conditions prior to taking out the policy to ensure full cover is in place. You will not normally get this from the sort of insurance you find at the airport or at the supermarket checkout, so it pays to check exactly what cover you are buying. An annual policy from 50plus offers quality cover at great prices.

Anything else could be a false economy.
